Who knew that Shakespeare dude could be so entertaining? References to him abound in this messy but enjoyable movie right down to the use of a remake of Nick Lowe's "Cruel to Be Kind." But you don't have to be a fan of the Bard to like this affable film.

Too many cringe-worthy moments of bad directing and bad bits that were not outweighed by the mostly good cast. It’s kind of like the director didn’t have a strong enough vision for what this film should be - and so it tries to be multiple things without committing to doing one well.

It's quite something to see how young these actors looked back in 1998/1999 who were just getting started with their (mostly) extensive careers. While most of the movie was predictable (like other romantic comedies) and while some stuff may not hold up entirely anymore in 2024, it was good enough for what it was meant to be. Julia Stiles did good in her role and was a talented actress for her age, and Heath Ledger did well too (died tragically way too young, RIP to him and his unique talent). I even liked the teacher played by Daryl Mitchell who is hilarious and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's friend/partner in crime.

the characters here are assholes and the humor is dated , however, god damn does heath ledger carry this movie. He's just so charming and you really believe his love for this girl he's seeing and it's just so great to see him acting. RIP heath ledger , you're a legend 7/10
