Robert Levin Newsday It's a fascinating, personalized exploration of an iconic cultural moment and its continued fallout. Rated: 3/4 Jun 17, 2024 Full Review Angie Han Hollywood Reporter At first, Brats feels like watching a man poke at his own bruises. Jun 14, 2024 Full Review Eric Deggans NPR A journey brimming with nostalgia, pop culture potency and a bittersweet look back at youthful times. Jun 14, 2024 Full Review Jen Maravegias Pajiba I enjoyed Brats because the soundtrack is killer and The Brat Pack is my Roman Empire. Thirty-plus years later, the movies still resonate because they present teens as fully realized human beings with complex internal lives. Jun 17, 2024 Full Review Patrick McDonald HollywoodChicago.com A refreshing take & in my book a Best Doc-style overview. What was expected to be nostalgia was instead actor folks trying to understand why they were grouped together in a Pack that wasn't of their making. I hope this was cathartic for all, esp McCarthy. B M "The toothpaste is out of the tube. It's not comin' back' Very enjoyable and insightful on the cycle of life. We all go through it. Alone or with others we have our own take on what transpired and we link to memories that support how we experience things. But we have a broader collection of memories tucked away that include all kinds of things that may contradict those feelings. Andrew McCarthy had a troubled relationship with this Brat Pack part of his past, so did others. The most illuminating comments were from Rob Lowe who put a loving positive spin on so many things that Andrew had problems with, and you could see the epiphanies hit Andrew as they talked because he then recalled all the positive things Rob spoke of but had tucked them away. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Mary L I ate, slept, breathed, and obsessed over these movies when I was in high school. I didn't think the Brat Pack term was pejorative at all. Within the first 10 seconds I realized what this was, actually: Andrew McCarthy's pity party table for one. Such a missed opportunity for a deep dive into Gen X nostalgia, but instead it's one long therapy session. He was probably always a tedious exhausting unhinged energy vampire back then and that's likely why some people didn't want to participate. If Andrew McCarthy is in your contacts list his calls go to voicemail. The only ending I wanted to see to this is Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez donning their letterman jackets and giving Andrew McCarthy a swirly. I think Andrew is upset that in every game of Brat Pack K*ll F*ck Marry, no matter who the other guys were, Andrew was always K*LL Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Anna O Wanted to love this doc. I couldn’t get into what felt like a doc made on a cell phone with little substance. Over an hour harping over an article written about young actors decades ago. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Rob G I was 15 the year St. Elmo's Fire and The Breakfast Club came out. For my generation, those two movies defined that generation and they both stand up well today. I've shown both to my kids and even they enjoy them. What I did not know back then was that the term "Brad Pack" that came to define these actors came as such a negative label for most of them. I always thought that term was bad ass. Was interesting to see their perspectives and how it impacted them negatively. Seems we were robbed of many more films from this group together. Shame. I wished they would have embraced that label back then and forged ahead, middle finger extended to the critics. If only..... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Jay C It was nice to see everyone. That was the only part I enjoyed. Other than that, it was an hour and a half of Andrew McCarthy whining that someone comically referring to him and the others as “The Brat Pack” forty years ago. Emilio Estevez claims to have turned down a role in the greatest script he ever read, Because he didn’t want to be in another movie with a “Brat Packer”. 🙄 You’ll notice the actors that were more successful are not bothered by the term. I was very disappointed in this documentary. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Liz E Speaks to how scrutinizing labeling from the media was then—appreciate the parallels to today (within reason of course). If you are looking for the personal perspective from ALL labeled as part of the “brat pack”, best to carry on. It’s less about gossip and more about the affect. The overall message is quite prolific, in and of itself. How can greatness be expected after an “X” is placed on your back? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
