      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Strong work from Benicio del Toro and Alicia Silverstone isn't enough to make up for Reptile's convoluted and ultimately underwhelming story.

      Audience Says

Solid acting and an engaging mystery help Reptile keep you hooked despite its slow pacing and a plot that might be too complicated for its own good.

Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A pretty effective murder mystery... [Benicio Del Toro] has aged very nicely into this sort of role. Oct 21, 2023 Full Review Kambole Campbell Empire Magazine Del Toro’s solid screen charisma can’t rescue Reptile, a derivative and lethargic thriller that rarely thrills as it tries and fails to build a case for itself as a meaningful iteration on the detective thrillers that it admires. Rated: 2/5 Oct 3, 2023 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times The fallout from all this purposeful gloom isn't merely that nothing surprises us; even Del Toro's committed portrayal of a careful man's gathering disillusionment gets jammed up. Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Dan Buffa Ramble On With Buffa (Substack) Hat tip to Del Toro and company. I like scripts that present a familiar formula in a mystery, and then proceed to have fun with the whodunit. Dec 3, 2023 Full Review Juanma Fernández París El Nuevo Día (Puerto Rico) The script suffers from having an excess of twists executed at a slow pace... [but] the cast never makes it boring. [Full review in Spanish] Dec 1, 2023 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Film Obsessive Reptile lets all the drama happen off screen with a third act deus ex machina. What could have been a knotty, suburban, coastal noir boils down to a detective story we’ve all seen before. Nov 13, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Loved the use of sound in this film, really helped amplify the suspense. Action-packed but the cops were slow (?). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Alex D It felt like it was trying to be something it wasn't and what's the deal with the nonstop moody music that often outshined the story, dialog and acting? It had a lot of potential and an interesting story but fell far short on execution. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Andrea T The plot started off gripping and kept you interested most of the movie. But the end unraveled too abruptly and robbed the viewer of any chill factor. The “who done it” wasn’t super obvious, but by the time it came around I was not impressed by it either. The acting was awesome, Alicia Silverstone and Benicio Del Toro crushed it, even Justin Timberlake did a good job. Overall, would I tell my sis to watch it on her night off from work? “Sure, but not past Wednesday and don’t over think it.” Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review James M Decent film, holds your attention. Police thriller but well done and a good cast. Only let downs are the overly dramatic music score. A producer must have decided it needed jazzing up which was unnecessary. Also the ending was a bit sudden. Worth a watch though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Brennan F Extremely underrated movie. Overall it’s a pretty straightforward neo-noir mystery/thriller. But the plot, while relatively typical and unoriginal, is gripping. The performances are fantastic, the delivery is flawless, and the suspense is masterful. People complain about the twists being predictable and convoluted, I think what they miss is that it’s not trying to shock YOU, it’s trying to make you feel the shock of the character. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review Benjamin G This suburban noir thriller held my attention from beginning to end. I knew it was going to be decent because Timberlake was in it, i.e. I can only imagine him and his team picking and choosing films that are only going to serve him well. Sure enough, it didn’t disappoint. What will lure viewers is the cinematography and score and Timberlake, but what is more impressive is Del Toro’s acting enjoyed by its pacing and ability to keep you guessing. There are errors throughout the film but it maintains a steady burn making you want to piece it together, only to let you down in the end because of how overly generic and flat it falls for such a complicated twist.
