The Strangers: Chapter 1 Reviews
As for the strangers, all they need to be is terrifying, a task at which they consistently excel. Just make sure to stay through the credits. That is, if you haven’t already rushed home to bolt the doors.

Not bold enough, it wasn't different enough, it wasn't exciting enough.

There's nothing new here.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a generic and boring slasher with a fundamental misunderstanding of its source material.

Renny Harlin’s reimagining of Bryan Bertino’s 2008 psychological thriller is thin on scares and plot

...exceedingly (and perhaps excessively) familiar territory that’s employed to periodically watchable yet progressively underwhelming effect...

It smartly utilises all the tropes of a good horror but does so with an extra layer of intelligence that elevates it beyond its shlocky potential.

Blunted by horror clichés and dumbness...

Chapter 1 may offer some nostalgic value, but it largely comes across as a redundant exercise.

“The Strangers: Chapter 1” (2024) is for anyone who saw “The Strangers” (2008) and thought, “I’d like to see this movie, but wish the actors were a little less famous.”

There's not a lot of gore, it's more of a thriller.

Harlin approaches the material with respect for the genre, both honouring it and subverting it where needed.

Personally, nihilistic horror hits me as more unpleasant and depressing than engagingly scary. Such bleakness bleeds out tension, making for a remake that is merciless but also exhaustingly familiar.

More of a shrug than anything else, but it also feels unfair to judge what is essentially just the first act of a much longer film.

Just sixteen years after The Strangers hit theaters, this admittedly well-executed copy does little more than increase our appreciation for the original films.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a compendium of bad ideas, shot through with a nasty line in creepy misogyny. There is nothing here that a hundred other films haven't already done better.
Full Review | Original Score: 1.5/5 | May 26, 2024
The scares aren’t scary, the gore isn’t especially nasty, and there’s very little reason for us to care about the two people running around screaming.

Clearly intended for younger viewers and those unfamiliar with Bertino's original, Renny Harlin's remake is well-shot, albeit too reliant on jump scares. Petsch is a solid Final Girl in a film that exists mostly to lay the foundation for the next 2 films

“The Strangers: Chapter 1” attempts, unsuccessfully, to delve into the idea that evil, must make some sense. Or that horror, at least, must lead somewhere. [Full Review in Spanish]
