      Hacks: Season 3 Reviews

Jean Smart is beyond brilliant, embodying a composite of trailblazing comediennes - like Joan Rovers, Phyllis Diller, Kathy Griffin, even Betty White - while Hannah Einbinder, daughter of Laraine Newman. has a terrific deadpan and subtly timed delivery.

Hacks continues to speak our language. [Full review in Spanish]

“Hacks” remains thoroughly enjoyable. The writing is smart, as it follows a once-popular comic balancing aging with an unwaning desire to entertain, and the acting is both humorous and poignant.

When Deborah gets a guest spot, “Hacks” hits its apex and puts everyone on alert. It’s the season’s best episode and yet another reason Jean Smart is the best female in a comedy series, hands-down.

A story with real pathos and raw emotions about how people connect, and don’t connect

Hacks hits its stride in a third season that’s even better than the first two.

Among the rapid-fire one-liners and scathing critiques of everything from culture wars, the wellness industry and Hollywood’s sexism and ageism, it’s Ava and Deborah’s relationship that remains the core of Hacks.

Fortunately, those slightly moody moments are handled breezily with the writers always ready to take a detour into other environments...

Hacks’ third season... is punchy and lithe, bringing beloved comic Deborah Vance and her socially conscious co-writer Ava back for a season that tightens the show’s focus, but keeps its ambitions broad. It’s a major triumph.

At its core, the series remains one of the best about the grind of learning an art form.

Besides being intelligent and addictive, it is the funniest comedy today. The Bear is very good, but it's not a comedy, it's something else.

Seeing Hacks return for a third season that's perhaps its strongest yet is a reminder that, given the chance, good shows often pay off over time in ways that can't be realized in their first, hottest, premise-establishing, character-establishing runs.

A great buddy comedy that bridges its generation gap with smart show-business satire, Hacks’ worth-waiting-for third season finds new purpose in the undying ambition of its lead...

But just know: If you were among those who (myself included!) wondered if Hacks should come back for more, rest assured. It’s still very much giving.

[Jean] Smart has always responded to great writing, and she nails every emotional turn this season.

“Hacks” with its singular edgy wit and biting charm is mightier and funnier than ever in its sublime third season.

      Full Review | May 3, 2024

Hacks keeps on keeping on in Season 3, finding a way to keep Deborah and Ava in each other’s emotional orbits even though they don’t work together anymore.

The secret to becoming a long-running sitcom is to do the same thing, differently. Doing it better is a dream. With its third season, Hacks indicates that dreams may actually come true. At the same time, it isn’t really a sitcom.

How many more times can we watch this repetitive process and still find it engaging? That’s something we probably needn’t worry about just yet. The show’s creators have proven adept at keeping things interesting, despite the occasional unnecessary ramble.

Hacks returns on a new creative high, one that positions itself to keep going as long as its pins can support it.
