      Am I OK? Reviews

The sharp cast generates some big laughs, while the screenplay modulates its silliness with an assured perspective and emotional depth.

Directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne seem more interested in the exploration, in the moments in between the big decisions than they do in the things we have to figure out. That’s what makes Am I OK? such a powerful movie.

Dakota Johnson is made for roles with nuance and depth, bringing her incredible range as an actress to the forefront in a glowing performance.

Throughout it all, Sonoya Mizuno and especially Dakota Johnson root this saga of self-discovery in riveting realism, turning in a pair of poignant performances that amplify the movie’s impact around them and linger long after the credits roll.

The new dramedy directed by comedian Tig Notaro and her wife, actress Stephanie Allyne is a well-intentioned but grating look at coming out in your thirties.

Am I OK? is neither groundbreaking nor violently offputting. It just exists, and sometimes that's enough to be enjoyable. Sometimes, it is enough for this premise to strike a nerve.

Max's I Am OK? has three endearing performances but lacks the necessary big laughs the script strives for.

There’s little room for frustration here; you won’t find outlandish sequences in which Lucy jumps into a lake, or goes on a drug-fuelled bender, or shoots a gun in the air. What is it that Americans do? Who knows?

Am I Ok? delves into a friendship threatened by changes and distance, but its drama comes to almost nothing and is resolved in the worst possible way. [Full review in Spanish]

Dakota Johnson is aces as a late bloomer coming out in her 30s. The touchingly personal script by Lauren Pomerantz is funny as hell, but it’s her delicacy of feeling that sneaks up and floors you. Something special is going on here. Treasure it.

This beautifully written light comedy is actually all about friendship. In particular, how to remain best friends when the worst of times happen along.

For not the first time in her career, Dakota Johnson makes amends for a particularly dismal blockbuster (50 Shades of Grey and now Madame Web) with an emotionally complex performance in an independent feature.

Witty and emotional look into the courage it take to lean into your authentic self without fear. Dakota Johnson gives a full-bodied performance only enhanced by Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne's direction

The right chemistry is there, too — if you told me Johnson and Mizuno had been friends since the third grade and hike on weekends, I’d believe you.

While not disruptive or overly provocative, this is a movie realized with sensitivity and conviction. [Full review in Spanish]

The ultimate message here may be simple, but it’s comforting: friendships may change but can still adapt, withstand and survive.

True, it has no story to speak of. Its characters are slightly befuddling, as is the casting... But what it does have is wonderfully natural dialogue that allows two talented actresses to spin a convincing friendship out of a gossamer narrative.

Johnson and Mizuno have an easy and comfortable chemistry; the acting is utterly authentic in their exchanges...

It is a delight, especially Dakota Johnson and Kiersey Clemons, even if the third act is not okay

      Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 4, 2024

Notaro and Allynne aren’t attempting to generate an epic about the pains of self-discovery. They go small and indie-style with the feature, which has modest dramatic goals, and reaches most of them with laughs and heart.
