Rustin Reviews
Colman Domingo brings wit and wisdom to Bayard, but his performance deserves a better film than this.

A story worth telling, but it's very much one of those movies that mistakes an important message for compelling filmmaking.

It is an awesome motion picture recreating an awesome time in our nation.

Colman Domingo's portrayal of him in George C. Wolfe's Rustin is warm and involving, and this is a somber drama about a consequential time in our nation's history...the Branford Marsalis jazz score in Rustin is as tasteful as expected, the film less so.

The first scenes already seem like something taken from a Seth Meyers sketch parodying this type of film, and your tolerance for this torrent of clichƩs will be key in figuring out if you want to get through to the end. [Full review in Spanish]

A biopic that, on the surface, enjoys a notable performance by Colman Domingo as the civil rights leader, but its narrative is often held back by conventional and very bland notes that weaken the basic history lesson. [Full review in Spanish]

Itās difficult to imagine the famously shrewd yet antagonistic Rustin being better cast.

Domingoās performance is electric. He captures Rustinās organiser as a defiant performer, making history he would be written out of.

It's an important work of historical storytelling that functions just as well as a compelling character study.

I’m all in on the film, as the historical reenactment of the march is wonderful to view. Coleman’s performance is one of the best this year--it's as if he were born to play the role of Rustin, he's that good!

If any acknowledgment of the difficult periods of America’s past are going to be banned from libraries and schools, then let art do what it can to fill in the gaps.

Colman Domingo commands the screen with his work. [Full review in Spanish]

Colman Domingo gives a commanding and charismatic performance in Rustin, a briskly paced drama that tells the story of underrated civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, who fought several public and private battles against racism and homophobia.

I believe that Coleman Domingo's powerful performance should be recognized by the Academy Awards this year as one of the best by a leading man in 2023.

Conventionally and competently made biopic.

An inspiring biopicture of the civil rights leader who organized the March on Washington.

Director George C. Wolfe is, at heart, a theater guy — and he recognizes that the heart and soul of “Rustin” is intertwined with the theatricality and bravado of Bayard Rustin.

Another solid one, with Domingoās lead performance deservedly earning Oscar buzz.

Rustin has more on its mind than solely one man, but likely would have been better served in honing its focus.

The first 4/5 of the script is paced so well that the ending feels rushed with only a brief song and the final lines of King’s speech. Still, it's overall, a strong telling of an important story.
