Civil War Reviews
Went into this film with no knowledge besides the good reviews. Left with having had a great film watching experience. This movie stayed in my head for quite some time after, and I think Alex Garland did a phenomenal job of telling the story without sacrificing appeasement to the masses. Props
This is a great movie that presents - in a very believable construct - the divisions in the USA in a future time. But not very far in the future. Imagine a major section of the US military deciding that it would rather support Trump than Biden, and that this cabal seizes weapons and armaments and declares war on the elected government, claiming that the election was rigged and invalid. While the film doesn't examine and articulate such a division closely, the viewer can imagine the horror and destruction of such a scenario. The production values are excellent and the acting is convincing. It is painful and gripping. One of the best movies of the year. It isn't a "family movie." Not for the faint of heart, nor for those with delicate sensibilities. We loved it.
Scary story when compared to real life right now. Acting was good, plot drew you in.
Highlight of 2024 so far! "Civil War" was unexpectedly good, packed with action and tension that offers a unique perspective on journalism. The acting was brilliant, the directing was fantastic, and overall, it was a magnificent film.
Was not what I was expecting. But I thought it was a very interesting take and I would recommend watching.
The story could have been better. The title was very misleading. I really wished I had picked a different movie to watch. I recommend not paying more than a monthly subscription service to watch this.
6.9/10 Recommend seeing it in theaters as the sound is extremely important. That's it. That's my entire review.
A strange movie- very well acted and directed but difficult to ascertain what it was actually trying to do or say. The lack of explanation on what caused the conflict didn't bother me too much -the war is just a backdrop to the story. It seemed to be more of a commentary on the voyeuristic state of modern journalism. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to though.
A definitely surprising film which I was not expecting to be as good as it was. The acting was strong however not anything to crazy and the story was interesting to be sure, however due to real life politics being controversial, it definitely seems as though they chose not dive to deeply into which side of the war believed in what political idea. Along with this in order to further separate itself from the real world it seems as though they chose the mos unlikely civil war side team ups as possible which although may have been mildly funny at first does draw back from this films likeability for realism. Overall, if you like war, political or very grounded films this is definitely worth a watch however don't go into the film expecting to walk out believing that it is one of the greatest modern day war films of all time.
There are some bumps and holes in this film but it creates a very sobering vision in a unique and singular way.
A good reflection on how the media mechanisms work during war
The film was exceptional, although I wasn't a fan of the story, some events seemed forced, unnecessary, and unrealistic which diminished the value. Overrated film.
The first quarter or more of the film is exhaustingly slow and the story line is weak. More of a forgettable art film.
This would have been received differently with a different title. Because of the current fever between ideology in the United States the immediate reflex is to try to figure out how the current situation led to the one in the film, and to figure out which side is "ours". There is an incredible level of attention to details of photojournalism that go unexplained to the lay viewer, which to me is the clue that this is a photojournalism movie. The political angle is just us looking at it through the lens of the current moment's political intensity. The story of Civil War is the story all conflict photographers eventually come to tell. There's the desire to get to the intensity of the thing that's actually unfolding — to see history in its making — and universally finding just confusion and horror (rather than triumph and purpose) when they do. They talk about how surreal and hard it is to be in normality (the scene in the dress shop). How compelling it is to go back to the adrenaline and horror. About it becoming an addiction that destroys you, that you armour against but that eats you from the inside. The long list of dead friends. How when the great (or evil) leader falls, they turn out to be just another ordinary and unimpressive man and, then, just another body. One character laments a colleague "not even dying for anything good" as if any story is worth the loss of a friend. To me, the echoes in all of that are throughout this film. It seemed to me to literally be a story about photojournalism. Or, rather, about what photojournalism knows about the confusing, brutal pointlessness of sides. Because also — nobody is looking at these pictures. They're out there bearing witness, and becoming husks of themselves to do it, but no-one is watching, or thinking, or questioning. The fact that there's no narrative crisis to resolve, no real hero, no real resolution, no clarity about which side is morally right (however compromised), that any clue about who has sided with who and why is heavily smeared are all part of the point. I thought it was excellent.
Just waisted almost 2 hours of my life. You don't know why they are fighting and the music is terrible. Definitely not recommend it.
To the critics who need the story explained. Have you ever heard of Cache by Michael Haneke or any Michelangelo Antonioni movies? I guess in simple terms to explain , Trump stated the war and the south won.
Alot.more to it than I thought there would be story could have done with abit more background but otherwise a good balance between the action and the chatty time
One of the worst movies I’ve seen in a while. Totally contrived and very shallow development.
Honestly the best movie ive seen in a long time. Sound work is absolutely phenomenal. Immersive. Powerful.
