      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Strangers has a handful of genuinely scary moments, but they're not enough to elevate the end results above standard slasher fare.

Sara Vilkomerson Observer The movie is best before the mayhem actually starts: First-time writer-director Bryan Bertino gets right some priceless details as the couple try to deal with the evening's earlier fallout, and elevates his movie above other horror films. Mar 31, 2019 Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times The formula of calm followed by shock is repeated until one tires of the technical polish of Bryan Bertino's directorial debut (with nods towards Funny Games and the French Them?) in the absence of coherent plot or character development. Mar 31, 2019 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer Bertino's directorial smarts are on display from the first slow-cut montage of rural homes glimpsed from the window of a moving car. It's a passage suggesting free-floating, arbitrary menace. Mar 9, 2018 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Not even Bertino’s impressive formal control as a first-time director can make up for how empty the material is and how absurdly familiar the whole thing proves to be Rated: 1/4 May 19, 2024 Full Review Toussaint Egan Polygon A lean and profoundly gripping horror movie that strips the home invasion subgenre down to its bare essential parts to drive home the intimate, primal terror of its premise. Oct 20, 2021 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The Strangers isn't scary, just tedious. Rated: 1/4 Aug 31, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Slow and predictable at first, then takes a turn and give the main characters things they need to survive the attack and the simple just don't use them. Wicked predictable and just bad. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review James B short but sweet film scott speedman and liv tyler are great in this film a well shot creepy horror film with good cinematography camera work and is the best of the strangers franchise more like a thriller than a horror film not very scary Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/08/24 Full Review Audience Member A whole lotta nothing, It’s like your average horror movie, I’d rather watch The Titanic Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review Me D It uses silence as a tool of fear, which is cool, but it gets a little boring throughout the movie at some parts. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review Suzanne L Worst movie I have ever watched. I feel guilty like I did something wrong by spending the $11 to watch this. It was not worth it. Absolutely horrible. Nobody in the movie even talks. No communication. The couple just hid around the house until they got tied up, asked to marry one another, cried saying I love you and stabbed to death. The girl lived but whatever, the masked guy stabbed her in the pelvis first because she said eff you. Lamest ever. I would be embarrassed to be an actor in this. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review Valdir F One of my favorite movie of all time. The Strangers is a radical take on home invasion genre, and grants us with terrific and genuine performances of the leads plus top-notch suspense. Amazing!!!
