94% Tomatometer 49 Reviews 82% Audience Score Fewer than 50 Ratings Celebrated directorial duo the Ross Brothers (Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets and Contemporary Color) turn their pioneering hybrid approach to the cinematic road trip with GASOLINE RAINBOW. Undoubtedly candid yet deeply loving, this is an expansive portrait of the new generation as told in their own words. With high school in the rearview, five teenagers from inland Oregon embark on one last adventure. Piling into a van with a busted tail light, their mission takes them to a place they've never been -- the Pacific coast, five hundred miles away. The plan, in full: "Fuck it." Through desert wilderness, industrial backwaters, and city streets, they connect with outsiders on the fringes and discover their lives will be determined by the trails they blaze themselves. These are forgotten kids from a forgotten town, but they have their freedom and they have each other, hurtling toward an unknowable future -- and The Party at the End of the World. A SXSW and Venice Film Festival selection, GASOLINE RAINBOW depicts a wild and true coming-of-age. With a beating heart and an irrepressible spirit, this rhapsodic look at today's American West reminds us of the timeless joys of community. Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's a little shaggy and seems aimless, but it ends up where it belongs. Jun 8, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) Thrillingly freewheeling and creatively invigorating, if a little confounding for audience members who prefer a neat delineation between documentary and fiction. Rated: 4/5 Jun 3, 2024 Full Review Jonathan Romney Financial Times There’s real exuberance in the unpredictability of the path, in the energies of the cast, and in the vivid, freewheeling imagery — shot by the directors, with stills inserted, some by the five leads. Rated: 4/5 May 31, 2024 Full Review Louisa Moore Screen Zealots The film celebrates universal themes of dreaming big, embracing adventure, and finding community and friendship, and those open to the movie’s experimental approach will find a heartfelt representation of the journey into adulthood. Jun 11, 2024 Full Review Manuel Betancourt FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) The movie takes off in the last third, when it comes together as a portrait of a wayward optimism that a lot of us lose. Jun 8, 2024 Full Review Stephen Silver The SS Ben Hecht It’s not quite as exhilarating as Bloody Nose, but it’s still quite a ride, with amazing visuals and well-chosen subjects. Phoenix L An absolute classic that epitomizes youthful search for life. Perfect for anyone born during this century but relatable enough for older crowds to reminisce on their own coming-of-age journeys. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review Claudia L Brilliant. Another example of how less is so often more in filmmaking. Without CGI or other "tricks", without a big budget, this film is left with simply expressing the heart of the subject matter-- that maudlin-and-joyful-in-equal-measures nature of youth stepping into the world with open minds and open hearts. The journey is everything. The cinematography is gorgeous. The Ross brothers show us the beauty of the land, with striking scene after striking scene, the beauty of the kids, and the beauty of the people the kids meet along the road. This film touched a deep place in my own heart, connecting me with the time when I was also young and felt that upwelling joy of the road stretching out ahead; that sense of jumping blind into a wide-open world where anything could happen. I absolutely loved this film! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
