I understand wanting to put messages in your art, but so often it is heavy handed and clumsy. As is the case with this show. And the ending was absolutely preposterous. Don't waste your time unless you like being preached at like you are 6 years old. What a waste of talent. It was made beautifully and depicted inner demons, addiction and mental illness in an honest way. The constant twists and revelations were equally shocking and clever. This crime drama kept you guessing what was going to happen next and who was guilty of a 9 year old boy's disappearance. Benedict Cumberbatch plays a father (Victor Anderson) whose son, Edgar, disappears while walking to school. Victor and his wife are, of course, desperate to find him. However, they haven't been getting along for quite some time, fighting all the time. So Edgar actually left their home angry at his dad, which adds to Victor's guilt. Victor can be quite the jerk at home and at work. The introduction of Eric as Victor starts to lose touch with reality adds a bit of surrealism to it, but it helped a dark subject from getting too dark. Eric is Victor's inner voice/imaginary friend that is based on a character puppet his son suggested to help save his dad's kids show. Victor had dismissed his son's pitch for Eric because he was in a bad mood after having a disagreement at work. He is convinced his son ran away and hopes if he adds Eric to the show that Edger will come home. The story is also told from the point of view of Detective Mitchell of the NYC missing persons dept., who is not only dealing with crooked cops, but also dealing with being a closeted gay man in the 1980s. There is another boy who went missing 11 months prior who he is also investigating. There are a few more intertwining storylines that keep you interested. It's tastefully done meaning they don't show anything overly graphic. There is a lot of language, alcohol, and drug use. So not for thekids.
