Her consent to marry him carries great personal risk, given that her predecessors are either vanquished, beheaded, or dead. When Henry appoints her as Regent, the nation's ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas, he lays a dangerous path for her. Henry's courtiers, suspecting she's sympathetic to radical Protestant beliefs that have taken root in the kingdom and are a threat to their power, scheme against her and cast doubts upon her fidelity to the increasingly ailing and paranoid King. Once Henry returns to England, his courtiers convince him to turn his fury on the nation's radicals, including Katherine's childhood friend Anne Askew, who becomes one of the scores of people convicted of treason and burned at the stake. Horrified and privately grieving, Katherine finds herself under ever-increasing scrutiny and suspicion. Knowing that even a whisper of scandal might lead to her downfall, Katherine must unleash her own scheme to fight for survival. Read More Read Less Now in Theaters Now Playing Buy Tickets

      Critics Consensus

Divorced from the historical record with little to show for it, Firebrand is a period piece whose revisionist aims are at odds with its stultifying approach.

Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture There’s a lot jam-packed into this movie, but it’s in such a rush to get through it all and to not bore us that it … well, it bores us. Jun 17, 2024 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times At a certain point, it feels as if scenes are missing, and what’s left reads as unconvincing. Jun 17, 2024 Full Review Murtada Elfadl AV Club A fitting portrait of a woman the film presents as ahead of her time. Rated: C Jun 14, 2024 Full Review Abbie Bernstein Assignment X An opulent drama about the last queen of Henry VIII. Rated: B Jun 17, 2024 Full Review Daniel M. Kimmel North Shore Movies The film falls short of making memorable the struggle for power as Henry declines. Instead, “Firebrand” smolders rather than burns. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 15, 2024 Full Review Jeanne Kaplan Kaplan vs. Kaplan Bolstered by splendid performances from Alicia Vikander and Jude Law, director Karim Aïnouz’s period piece, FIREBRAND, is a fascinating depiction of Katherine Parr, the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII. Andre I really enjoyed it. Great acting and great story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Tom C Liked the acting. Disliked historical inaccuracies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Sue Beautiful scenery and costumes, great actors, but scenes were too dark and we could not properly hear the dialogue Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Nina K Loved Jude Law but offended the historical falsity. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Shawn K It was really good until they just completely fictionalized the ending. I get creative license but rewriting Henry's death is a bridge too far. Toward the end of the movie I completely lost interest because, it was obvious, the filmmaker had no interest in telling the actual story.
