Steven Spielberg's adaptation of War of the Worlds delivers on the thrill and paranoia of H.G. Wells' classic novel while impressively updating the action and effects for modern audiences.

Wendy Ide Times (UK) This superior popcorn flick revels in the unabashed joy of blowing stuff into oblivion. Jul 5, 2022 Full Review Nell Minow Beliefnet The story is affecting, the action scenes are thrilling, the issues are resonant. Rated: B+ Aug 15, 2013 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Spielberg's calculations turn out to be more prominent than any effects they could possibly produce, and the less pretentious 1953 version by producer George Pal emerges as more likable. Jun 8, 2007 Full Review Alan Jones Radio Times The first (and much the superior) hour is a masterclass in escalating tension, with grandiose and brilliantly executed sequences following in rapid succession. Rated: 4/5 Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Highly influential, ever innovative, and full of emotion and slick formal trickery, the film lives up to the precise definition of what "Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds" should be. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 5, 2022 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Cruise is in fine dramatic form and Spielberg's journey to the dark side is superbly realised. Bernard D I've never understood the hate on this movie. The entire cast is fantastic. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Julian Rex M Spielberg has created a new kind of end-of-the-world movie outstanding in every way. Many blockbuster films of this genre are directional, following a coherent storyline and never leaving the audience hanging on the thorny thread of not knowing. War of the Worlds counters by focusing on a story of a family rather than a story of a world. We never know more than they know, and that lack of information leads us to feel the fear that they feel. Spielberg has created an alien movie without any of the typical Hallmarks that tank them. Supported by outstanding cinematography and impeccable performances, War of the Worlds conveys a feeling unlike any I have felt before. For this film, Spielberg deserves a crisp high-five. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Lucas t I thought this was very good, I've been watching a few end of the world scenario films with my mum recently and this is probably the best one we've seen so far, well second best. 7.4/10. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/24 Full Review Iker V Many people say that it is very slow but for me it has the necessary rhythm, because it is not a movie with explosions or that wants to be incredible with its visual effects like Michael Bay, this is a suspense movie with occasional action, and you have to watch it. do with those expectations since it achieves it very well, sometimes you can feel the desperation of the characters in search of survival, and although the resolution may be somewhat disappointing, for me it is still a great, great movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Jordan W Yeah, the idea that human beings surviving the invasion because the aliens were killed by Earth-native bacteria and viruses that human beings have become immune to is a nice sentiment. But it's also like saying what if the first colonizers who came to America were killed by the smallpox native American's had instead of what actually happened. It doesn't make any sense. You're telling me the ayylmaos with their infinite technology weren't able to detect that Earth was FILLED with deadly pathogens after all their years of planning? And that the aliens themselves didn't have pathogens of their own that they could've brought to Earth? The aliens were completely sterile? And for whatever reason OUR pathogens were somehow more dangerous to them when they're the invading species with god knows how many pathogens of their own? It's nonsense. Also the Tim Robbins bunker scene feels like it lasts 3 miserable hours and makes an already sloppy movie with some sporadically excellent scenes feel like an overall chore to sit through. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/21/24 Full Review Janee M The story didn't need the teen angst or Dakota Fanning screaming the entire way through. A great Sci Fi story was ruined by a the addition of the whinny family storyline. The children's characters ruin it. When the son dues all I could think was THANK JESUSat least one annoying character is gone. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews
